A political spectrum is a way to see the differences between the various beliefs and ideologies of political positions. The main issues that determine the differences between the positions are division of wealth, individual freedom, and the rate in change within a society. The different types of spectrum's are as follows: The Traditional Political Spectrum Left Wing ..........socialist ......................... centrist ................ conservative .......... Right Wing
l-------------------------------l-------------------------{-----------------------}------------------------l-----------------------------l
Left Wing: The left wing ideology covers the left half of the spectrum. It ranges from centrist values to the extreme left wing values of communism. The most prominent values of a left wing society are as follows:
Equal or shared wealth
Promotes change to support the people
More individual freedoms
Giving more power to the people and less to authority
Providing fair and equal rights to all citizens
State plays a major role in supporting its citizens (social service, benefits, equality etc.)
Collective social ownership
These values vary in extremity depending on the position on the spectrum. Right Wing: The Right Wing ideology covers the right side of the spectrum, ranging from centrist views to the far right fascist ideology. The main values and beliefs of the political right wing are as follows:
Traditional values; less desire for change
State control should be less
Businesses/Corporations should adhere to the needs of the citizens
Heavy influence of law and order to protect the citizens and traditions
Less personal freedom
Social hierarchy
Giving power to authority and less to people
Again the ideology varies in extremity depending on the position on the spectrum. Centrist: The centrist position is one that takes both Right and Left wing ideas and combines them to create a hybrid. It mixes the vales of both to create a mid ground. The values are as follows:
Tradition is valued, however change is praised upon popular demand
Legal systems are set in place to honor and protect the equal rights of citizens
The state’s role is to improve the lives of the citizens
Examples of centrist politics are the main Canadian political parties (NDP, Conservative, Liberal, Green Party)
The centrist position is to provide a balanced view of Right and Left wing politics.
